Technical Research: Continuity

We wanted to make our production flow as smoothly as we could through all of the different shots. This was difficult because we had to line every shot up perfectly when they cut and the actors needed to act something out several times in the exact same way to give the film flow. We used our preliminary to test continuity and see if we could manage to get it to work, this was done in the cut when Owen is seen opening the door on one side and starting to walk in, and then cuts to the other side of the door as he finishes opening to door and skips into the room, shown below.

The continuity between these two shots worked well and it made the preliminary flow and look like it all happened in one move, when in reality it was two different takes of Owen doing the same thing. We carried on using continuity in our main production, the best use of continuity in our main production is a cut from a CCTV camera to a long shot of the antagonist slapping the protagonist, shown below. This shot worked as we made the two actors do the same thing twice and try and replicate it as well as they could.

Continuity in a film is one of the main things needed to make a film flow, as without continuity, films would not have any flow and would not look right, which wouldn't engage the audience.
